Our mission is to nurture the whole child — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually through meaningful, hands-on experiences with the natural world.
Educational Philosophy & Curriculum
At Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church Nature Preschool, we offer a Christian child-led, nature-based curriculum. We believe that children are natural explorers, capable of driving their own learning journey. By closely observing our students' interests and the seasonal changes around them, our teachers design a unique, dynamic learning experience. Your child will not just sit at a desk — they will lead the way. Through child-led play, deep exploration of nature, and hands-on discovery, we nurture their individual curiosities. At Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church Nature Preschool, we believe the environment is the “third teacher” — a vital partner alongside our educators (first teacher) and peers (the second teacher) in shaping your child's growth. It is our mission at SMPC Nature Preschool to not only immerse your child in the wonders of nature, but to bring the Bible to life for your little one. We use story boxes, each centered on a different Biblical narrative, which encourage young hearts and hands to wonder, play, and build their own meaningful connection with God.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much time will my child be outdoors?
Your child will spend at least 1 hour or 30% of time outdoors each day.
How does the weather impact my child’s time outside?
There are no bad weather days–only poor clothing choices, as the saying goes. That means we will be outside in snow and mild rain; however, if students need a bit of a break from the elements, we will enjoy nature reflected in the cozy indoor space. We will NOT go outside in extreme weather (below 25 degrees F or thunderstorms).
What safety/security measures are in place?
Children will be supervised at all times in all spaces. Doors will remain locked during hours of operation. Fencing secures the outdoor classroom, and all areas are free from hazards. Only adults with necessary clearances will be permitted around the children. Emergency Operations Plans are in effect and available in the classroom.
How will my child be prepared for kindergarten?
Teachers will provide lessons and assess student understanding of letters, numbers, print, self-help skills, gross motor, fine motor, social/emotional, and cognitive development in accordance with the PA Early Learning Standards. Parent conferences will be held to discuss kindergarten readiness.
Does my child need to be potty trained?
It is preferable that your child be well on his/her way to being fully potty trained; however, we understand that there are different levels of development. Teachers will work alongside parents to navigate potty training issues.
What training do the teachers have?
Teachers are highly qualified. They have current certifications in all required training including first aid, CPR, mandated reporter training and DHS training. Each teacher has a teaching license and/or certification.
Is the preschool certified?
SMPC Nature Preschool is in the process of obtaining licensure through the DHS.
DAILY SCHEDULE
Arrival/Sign In
The adult dropping off the child will make sure the child has used the restroom, washed their hands, put away their backpack and extra clothes and signed in for the day, then takes him/her to the outdoor classroom (dressed for the weather) to join the teachers. We will begin each day together with a prayer.
Outdoor Play
Every day, children will enjoy at least an hour of uninterrupted play in our outdoor classroom. They can explore a wide variety of activities, including water and sand play, fort building, digging, gardening, and dramatic play.
Transition Time
(washing hands, changing shoes, etc.)
Snack and Story
Large Group
Children take part in conversation, greet one another, engage in music and movement activities, listen to stories, sing songs and participate in other whole-group activities.
Free Play or Choice Time
Children have time to choose an activity among the different interest areas of the indoor classroom. This allows children to lengthen attention spans and to develop competency with an activity. Children may choose activities that occur in any of the interest areas including blocks, library, dramatic play, art, toys or games.
Small Groups
Adult-initiated activities occur in small groups and allow teachers to focus on a particular skill set. These activities provide children with the opportunity to ask more questions and allow the teacher to evaluate each child’s needs and progress. This is an opportunity for more concentrated learning.
Farewell Circle Time
We gather to recall activities from the day, pray, and say goodbye before parents pick up the children.
Our Space
We intentionally designed our indoor and outdoor classrooms to spark curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Inside, children will find a cozy space filled with Montessori-inspired, open-ended materials. Outside, a unique world of adventure awaits. Our outdoor classroom offers endless opportunities to climb, dig, and create. From mud kitchens and outdoor easels to climbing logs, a large sandbox, and our own organic garden, every detail is thoughtfully chosen to inspire your little learner to explore and grow.
